What Happens When You Don’t Regularly Clean Your Dryer Vent?

Failing to regularly clean out lint and debris from your dryer vent system leads to dangerous lint clogs. This prevents the lint in your laundry from exiting your home. Instead, the lint accumulates inside your vent and clothes dryer. This lint build-up can and will easily ignite on fire, like below:

Burnt lint in the bottom of a customer’s clothes dryer where they were lucky to not have the fire spread to the rest of their home. This must be cleaned to remove smokey smell and reduce the high risk of fire again.

This fire can spread to the rest of your house or business, especially if you don’t have the right materials for your dryer ducting. Pictured below is our demonstration on how improper dryer vent materials fuel a lint fire.

Warning Signs Your Dryer Vents Need Cleaning Or Repair

Dryers are a critical appliance for our day-to-day chores. The lint traps in your dryer only catch about 40-60% of the lint produced from your laundry. The rest of the lint is exhausted outside along with the hot moist air through your dryer vent. This lint naturally builds up in your dryer duct. This can and will create a lint clog that prevents your dryer from being able to exhaust the moisture and hot air appropriately.

Maintaining your dryer vent system reduces fire risk, extends the life of your dryer, and saves you time and money, so look out for these warning signs:

Are you waiting forever (50+ minutes), or having to run multiple cycles to successfully dry your laundry?

It’s likely an excessive buildup of lint is impacting your dryer’s ability to exhaust the moist air from your clothes efficiently.

If during or after a drying cycle you notice a burning smell, stop using your dryer immediately. It means that lint in your vent, or inside the base of your dryer is smouldering from excessive heat, causing the smokey or burning smell.

This means you need an immediate inspection to discover why there is a burning smell to reduce your fire risk.

The transition hose from your dryer to the wall can become crushed/deformed by objects falling behind your dryer, or pushing the dryer too close to the wall. This makes it too easy for a clog to form, and must be fixed to ensure optimal dryer functionality.

Ducts can also rust and breakdown if moisture isn’t exhausting properly. This can also cause carbon monoxide build-up with gas dryers, and growth of mould.

Some modern dryers monitor air pressure to tell when your vent is getting excessively clogged with lint.

Codes like “Check Vent,” “AF” (Restricted Air Flow), and D80, D90, and D95 mean you have to clean your vent of any obstructions. Usually it’s a lint clog, but sometimes it can be a pest in the vent, or even a crushed transition hose.

If your laundry or dryer exterior is almost too hot to touch, it means your dryer is not able to efficiently exhaust hot air and moisture. This excessive heat can be wearing out your dryer’s heating element – reducing your dryer’s lifespan and increasing the risk of fire.

Your dryer vent cover flap(s) won’t open, or have visible lint around them.

An easy way to find your vent cover is to turn your dryer on, and look outside your house for the vent cover that is forcing air out. In winter, you can usually see the moisture from your dryer as steam leaving the vent cover.

How Often Should Your Dryer Vent Be Cleaned?

Dryer vents should be cleaned every 3-24 months depending on how much laundry you do, and how efficient your system is. Regular dryer duct cleaning is recommended by dryer Manufacturers, the City of Toronto, and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs to prevent fire risk.

After your cleaning, your Hero Technician will recommend a cleaning plan to deter dangerous lint build-up. This keeps you safer, and with a more efficient dryer that saves you money!

Do We Offer Air Duct Cleaning?

No, we do not offer air duct cleaning.

The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have found no conclusive proof that air duct cleaning will improve the quality of air you breathe. In fact, the process of duct cleaning can temporarily worsen your air quality as the system is disturbed.

At Dryer Vent Hero, our goal is to make your home safer, save you money and time, and help prevent the trauma of a fire.
